Students Zhang Qiao-Han, Huang Chi-Yao Winning「2024 A+ Culture Heritage Creative Award/ Special Award」with the work「SOLU Indoor Tec Joss Paper Burner」. Faculty advisor:Huang, Meng-Fan
Burning joss paper is a traditional Taiwanese ritual used to convey respect and affection to deceased ancestors. However, due to increasing environmental concerns, this activity is gradually being banned and faces the risk of being lost. SOLU aims to address the pollution and space limitations of traditional joss paper burning by introducing a home appliance solution. By using water-soluble joss paper and a circular service design, SOLU allows users to maintain the ritualistic essence of offerings in an environmentally sustainable way, thus creating lasting cultural value. This innovative process replaces traditional flame burning with a shredding mechanism, significantly reducing carbon dioxide and PM2.5 emissions. The use of water-soluble joss paper and recyclable packaging eliminates the fire hazards associated with conventional joss paper burning and ensures safer, eco-friendly disposal of joss paper residue. After completing the ritual, users can place the joss paper residue into the provided packaging box and bring it to partnered stores for recycling, further enhancing resource utilization. This design effectively solves the environmental problems associated with traditional joss paper burning while preserving the cultural heritage of rituals, achieving both environmental and cultural sustainability.
